Boston, MA
Exif:
1/25s f/3.2 ISO 800 11mm
Description:
The effect results from dragging the shutter to allow ambient light to collect while I rotated the camera around the center of the lens. The flash fired at the end of the exposure, capturing a clear image of Fred.

    What do you like?

Great image, edgy, raw, artistic perfect for the subject.

    What would you improve?

I like it the way it is so nothing at all

@kanonkop, Thank you. It's pretty easy to get the effect, actually. Just practice rotating a few times as you watch the camera to get a feel for how to twist your arm, remembering that you want the camera to rotate around the center of the lens rather than the center of your wrist. This shot was taken at 1/25 sec using a 11-16mm f/2.8 lens at 11mm (equivalent to about 17mm on my DX format camera), and I've gotten good results with slightly longer exposure times too.

excellent technique with great results! i imagine you need quite a steady hand to ensure that you rotate along a central axis, or do you find the technique is fairly forgiving? what shutter speed to you recommend for something like this?

@Colleen Thanks! I've sent you an email describing the technique in some detail. The one thing I neglected to mention is that you need to balance the degree of ambient light with the flash, otherwise you can end up with too much of one or the other. It's largely (for me, anyway) a matter of trial and error. I'm going to post another image I took using rear curtain synch, just for fun. I'd be interested in seeing your results if you try it out.
