- One of the things I am trying to improve is my portrait photography. I don't have any lighting yet, so I mainly shoot out doors. This is my daughter. I was using a bit of late afternoon sunlight to light up her face. Would appreciate any feedback I can get.

What do you like?
Perfet focus on the eyes. Great subject, and adorable smile.

Agree with the light/shadow comments. Also - my eye keeps getting drawn to the dark barrette/clip right in line with her eyes. Crop/frame that out?

Try to crop so that eh eyes are 3rd of the way down the photo, scroll down on the screen to block out the top of the photo to see how it helps. Generally this is works for 80% of portraits.

You have some somewhat unwanted shadows crossing the to the left of her face, couple ways to fix this.
1, turn her face toward the light source until the shadows are gone, have her eyes still focusing on the lens.
2, use a helper and reflector to reflect light from the light source back onto the unwanted shadows.
Hope this helps.-

senoch@justincbongers Thanks for the advice Justin.

What do you like?
Beautiful hair and eyes! I'm pretty partial to redheads :) Great focus and attention on her eyes. Good DOF too.

Since you're looking specifically for portrait advice, here's some ideas...
1. There is a bit too much space above her head. Since this is a close up, try and fill the frame. If you were doing landscape orientation or a full body shot, the space would be nice -- but in this case, I think a crop would help.
2. Props (i.e. the flowers) are an awesome idea, but I think they are too high in this picture. Have them be a bit lower so they don't crowd out/distract from her face.
3. I do all my portraits outside too -- I just haven't been able to afford external flashes yet! However, I have found that getting a 4-in-1 reflector kit is an easy and inexpensive way to add better lighting to outdoor portraits. You can get one for about $20 on amazon. I use it a lot, and it allows me to even out the lighting. And in the meantime, wrapping aluminum around a large piece of cardboard can be a cheap lighting tool too :)-

senoch@KatiePhotographie Thank you for your great advice. I really appreciate it. Wish I could mark your post with 2 thumbs up!
