Absolutely a brilliant exposure, I am happy you not have the full helmet. His expression ( to Me,), is that he had just fought for 5 days and he lost many buddies, as he walks to a safe place he looks, and takes in the beauty of a dog looking up at him.

What do you like?
I like the facial expression, it withholds a sea of emotions.
I can see relief and sadness both present at the same time in this man's face, which succeeds to show us that this soldier has experienced something terrible and shows us that he's relieved it's over.14 June 2012What would you improve?
The outer white frame should be removed in my opinion as it is unnecessary

His facial expression matches the context. This could be a shot from a war movie of a soldier, who has experienced horrible things, can finally stop fighting. The B&W conversion enhances the mood of the picture a lot.
12 June 2012What would you improve?
Overall the lighting is great. Again, some nitpicking: the bright spots on both shoulders are slightly distracting.

very cool shot. i think you've controlled the light nicely inthat the background isn't totally white and i also like that his body is under exposed.

i would be curious to see a slightly more contrasty version, possibly with more grain, to mimic an old school soldier shot.
I'm not totally convinced this guy has been through the hell of war.. perhaps dirt on his face or something could 'toughen' him up a bit (if this is a posed shot??) -

G'day Gabor, Like a still shot from "Saving Private Ryan", this portrait shows the stress and strain of warfare in the face and eyes of this soldier. The B&W locks it in time and your processing has brought the very best this image has to ofer. Great work by you both. GB D!
Helpful 1 6 June 2012What would you improve?
I suggest removing the distractions of the thread of camouflage poking up into our top right corner and the bulge of the equipment on the soldier's left shoulder.

Great portrait! That look of weariness is powerful and the photo is technically excellent.
5 June 2012What would you improve?
I would use a marginally tighter crop. Not a lot, just enough to get rid of the overexposed item on his left shoulder and the completely dark bottom border.
