am experimenting with getting the right shutter speed to capture the motion blurr but still get the surfer relatively sharp

The surfboard looks like you panned at the right speed, but I think your shutter speed was too long to cover other movements the surfer is making.

This is nice, I like the effect, motion blur - you want to practice panning to get what you want, I agree it would be nice without the person in front but none the less this is pretty cool photo, well done
