- Construction was started on Fort Jefferson in 1847 and it was never fully completed. The fort is the largest masonry structure in the western hemisphere. This is also where Dr. Mudd was sent to prison after the Lincoln assasination. There are only two ways to reach Fort Jefferson, by boat or by sea plane.
