- Just practicing taking panning shots on a busy street in Toronto.. saw a skateboarder flying down the road, seemingly unconcerned by the traffic surrounding him, and luckily was able to capture an image of him going by.

What do you like?
Loving the idea, good effort with vivid colours.

My advice for panning is follow the subject, take the shot and follow through with the movement after the shutter has been pressed. Seems to get better results. As does plenty of practice!

just work on the focus a bit and I think you'll do great with panning

I like the idea you had for this image. Panning is not an easy thing to get down. I think the colors of the background work well. I give you praise for practicing panning I like to use the local park and shoot flying birds.

For me I think the skateboarder is just to blurry the focus seems to be more on the bottom of his backpack white patch red letters then his face sorry. I commend you for the idea and practicing. The big thing I learned was to keep panning even after the shutter has closed follow thru.

Skinsfan@redb I use all different speeds to try and get what I'm looking for. And like you I'm also hit and miss I use one focus point and try to keep that point on the subject same place thru out the pan. I have found for myself that I tend to slow down when I'm taking the exposure. So I have to pan faster then I think when I do pan faster I get more useable images.

I love the way that you captured the motion: It really is also well reflected in your description how the contrast between the still/standing person and the hectic traffic is the essence of this picture - perfectly executed!
1 NovemberWhat would you improve?
As always is the case with panning pictures: No matter how experienced one is, there is absolutely no way around trial'n'error - either with the same/proven settings or also with different settings to find the best for the scene in front of you...
redb@Skinsfan hey thanks! I agree.. focus could be better, but that's the thing with panning shots is that it seems to be hit and miss no matter how many times I try. I almost threw out this picture because his head is blurry as you mentioned, but it was by far the most interesting shot of the whole set. Maybe I'll play in PS and see if I can manually sharpen his head :)
2 NovemberI do continue the pan past the end of the exposure.. what shutter speed to you use when doing panning shots? This was at 1/8.. maybe at 1/10 I could have improved the sharpness without losing some of the blur.
