- Description:
- One of my first photos taken within my new delving into the photography world with my gifted Canon EOS 400D/Rebel xTi from around 2008. This was taken using an EFS 55-250mm, at 250mm, f7.1, ISO100, 1/1250. I touched this a bit in Camera RAW, bringing the horizon closer to the top third and keeping the man near the bottom left third vertical as best as I could, as those details were not thought of well when capturing. I know sharpness on the man is not very good, I must have had a slight focal issue. Any feedback and advice is well received as I have just started getting into it, and need any help I can get..

Here is my revision, used the photo taken just prior from the sequence, cropped to a similar aspect of the original, however I was able to keep the entire surfer and more of the beach sand. I straightened it dramatically in Lightroom this time, not ACR, which instantly helped the image to feel more pleasing, I kept a less-warm overall tone to the photo after upping the exposure, spot removing a bird I didn't want, sharpening as much as possible without making the slightly out of focus to begin with surfer look even worse, but from A-B it did improve to my eyes with the slight sharpening. I also increased the contrast as Flyer01/Mike suggested with the Histogram which also was a good thing for this shot. Overall, I am much more pleased with the shot after taking into account your input Mike and running through Lightroom 5.6 not my old Camera RAW from 3 years ago..I hope you all like it more as I do :)

What do you like?
Nice shot. The water, sand and surfer make for a nice composition.
What would you improve?
I would have to agree with Mike about the slanted horizon and the sharpness of the photo, also it would have been nice to get the whole surfer into the shot. Welcome to Focussion!

What do you like?
Hi Ryan. Welcome to Focussion. I think this shot is a nice scene with the crashing waves and the surfer in the foreground.
What would you improve?
The first thing is to level the horizon, it is falling to the right. The image seems a bit flat to me so I suggest you have a look at the histogram and slide the central slider to the right, this will increase the mid tone contrast adding depth. I would also increase the exposure (brightness and the overall contrast a little, you could also add a little sharpening. All of these adjustments can be found in most post processing software. Just a few ideas for you to try. Keep posting. Mike.

ryanjustinflynn@Flyer01 thanks Mike I really appreciate the feedback, I specifically googled to find a forum where people respond and found Focussion and now I'm glad I did! I'll take all these points into account!

SpotfistWelcome to Focussion, you should apply the changes and upload as a revision as it would be nice to see the finished article, its just under you image above. Also I have the same camera as you so can't wait to see what you put on next!

Flyer01@ryanjustinflynn Hi Ryan. This is now a much better picture in all respects. I use Lightroom most of the time for adjustments only using Elements where I want layers. Good work. Mike.
19 February 2015SpotfistWow, excellent work! The photo has completely changed, the colours are now much better turning a rather bleak scene into something far more vibrant, also I like how now the surfers legs are no longer cropped out. This is great and I am really glad you uploaded a revision, excellent, excellent work!
19 February 2015ryanjustinflynnThe original was quite washed out with a too warm of tint, which I realised once I started from scratch again and saw the first edit. Thanks guys!
19 February 2015skypilotMuch much better. I like it.
19 February 2015Brie97I think that the revised version is a lot better than the original because the original looks more grey-ish blue vs the new version that has more bright blues. I also like that the new version doesn't cut off the surfer at the legs and how the subject is more on him than on the sky.
22 February 2015RussBillI didn't comment on your original photo, but this is a beauty. I love the composition and colours. Great photo!
