I agree about the "from the ground upward" point of view, it would have been better balanced, with more dynamic (less ground too).
On the portrait by itself, I think you missed the bottom right corner... :)
You should close-up a bit more, croping out more of his neck, it wouldn't hurt, even if you have to move the face a little bit on the right too, as to keep the hair in the frame.
This has a documentary feel to it. It's the sort of photo that would appear at the top of an article in a magazine.9 April 2011
I do wish he was facing us in the skateboarding shot though, and maybe shot with a wide angle from the ground looking up.
Your portrait is spot on - I don't think there is anything I would change there. I feel connected to your subject, so you've really captured emotion.
The two pictures together work well too. I'm not sure if you had to do any balancing to get them to match so well, but neither is dominant. Nicely done!
