Independent Portrait Photographer
I started working for a popular photography company a few years ago. I found that I really enjoyed creating great portraits for people. I also found that I do not like offering free stuff to poor people and then trying to sucker them into a huge package that puts them in debt. I am now starting my own independent business, and would like to know if anyone has any tips to get more customers? I am on a budget.

Give http://beaprophotographer.com a look. Found them to have a decent amount of useful information.

Use your social media as a means of marketing. It's completely free and you get to work with your friends. Create a referral program for them so that if they bring you more business, they can earn free prints. It's worked out really well for me.

Hi @Loreen72 I would love advise. I am really trying to figure out what is the best way to get customers. I have had a few, but with my kids being home for summer they were really my focus since this was first time I had been home full time with my kids in 2 years.

But now the kids are back in school and I am ready to roll and want it to be big eventually. (hopefully sooner then later) I am on a very limited budget so paying for marketing is out of the question. I have a website and I am getting my actually license in 2 weeks. And I will be getting insurance with PPA soon after. Other than that I need the customers. Any suggestions are very welcome. Thank You! :D If you want you can take a look at my website: www.fmtyphotography.com -

Hi @Colleen. I just recently closed my studio so I could concentrate more on teaching and being more creative with my own photography. I've helped two students set up their own photography businesses - so if you have some specific questions, I can certainly help you out with any answers I may have.

@Aljan Thanks, that's some great advice. I have an idea that might get some news attention and still it fills my desire to give back to young moms who have no money to get great baby portraits done. I am very excited about it. I have a twitter account but I don't use it that often, I will though with your advice. I do have a website, but I need to get the word out a little better (and keep on budget) :) Thanks again.

I'm not a professional, I don't make money with photography. But get into twitter and facebook a lot, pay attention to your followers and be honest. Combine this with a great website and show of your work! Also get some exciting series and try to get attention from local websites / newspapers and stuff. And of course on your website.
