I generally use Lightroom 4 to start with and it does a great job on 80% for the photo adjustments. For most adjustments it has more finite control than the photoshop elements 11 that I also use. I'm just glad I don't have to pick between them. They each have there place and strenghts and pass work back and forth well. I have only had lightroom4 for about two weeks. But it is growing on me more and more all th time. I did upgrade photoshop elements from 9 to 11 and am not sure that it was worth the investmest or not. I'm still getting used to it as well. The best part of upgrading is learning how to do the same things in a different way. I have been learning alot from the tutorials online. It is well worth the time to go through some of the basic one at least.

I would like to use PSE 11. Very good program for what I do most. And also it will help me have better images and maybe more clients will come to me, and also I would like to upgrade from my older version PSE 8.

I use Lightroom primarily and CS5 for stuff that Lightroom can't or doesn't handle as well as CS5. That being said Photoshop CS5 has a ton of stuff you'll probably never use so I would suggest PS Elements would be more than sufficient for any photo processing.

Try any trial packages before you dole out your hard earned cash. -

students and people working for universities or other research institutes get software very cheap...

@luc how did you manage that?

I bought the full CS5.5 for 27 euros. Works like a charm!

It is my latest acquisition. My feeling is that results may produce more quality and finish to give the edge in competitions. My outcomes with Capture One so far are very pleasing but I have only used it with my better images to produce premium quality.

How much have you used Capture One and how does it compare to Photoshop?
I do love Paint Shop Pro and used it long before Photoshop. Their methodology though has been falling behind in comparison to the Adobe products, IMHO. -

@barrington Elements is a lite version of CS5, while Lightroom is slightly different in purpose and scope. Photoshop, either version, is a digit photo editor. Lightroom is the digit equivalent to a darkroom, where a shoot (like a roll of film) can be processed either in batch or by individual images (like negatives). It is geared to working with files in one of the RAW formats. Photoshop can do amazing things like removing individual elements from an image, add elements like text, flares, and too many other magical manipulations.

I've discovered that you can get a free 30 day trial from there website, so gonna give them all a tryh before I decide. I thought though that elements was the most basic and that Lightshop was the next step up, I take it from what people have said it is the other way round?

I have just started a photoshop course at college and have been advised that Photoshop Elements 11 is due for release in about 3 months time so if you decide to go down the Elements route it may be worth holding off for a while.

I use CS5 and it works wonders. I have tried out Lightroom, but it seemed very limited. With CS5, there is always something new to learn!

@barrington CS5 is a whole lotta program, but is also a bit pricey. If you are needing the state of the art with all the bells and whistles, go for CS5. If all you're needing is some more involved tweaking beyond what LR is capable of, but don't need everything that CS offers, look into Elements.

@barrington Oh, I use Lightroom3 for all my initial and general processing and finish off in PS with more tweaks. But that's just my workflow. Both programs are very good. GB D!

@barrington Well Baz, it is the latest non-beta version. I have used it and found it a great program.

I'm fairly well entrenched in Lightroom at he moment. There are issues, as with any processing software, but it does a bang up job at prepping raw photos for use.

I use Lightroom. I like it's simplicity.
