Feedback - lack of
I've enjoyed Focussion for a couple of months now but over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that feedback is getting less and less. I have also noticed that people who were using this site when I first came onto it have now disappeared and regular posters are becoming a lot less frequent! It is still always good to see other's pictures but without the feedback a lot of people will lose interest and possibly move away from this site...so come on everyone, please post constructive feedback as much as possible!

Frank I was indeed the initiator of this post and am not intimidated by your comments or your feedback left on my last picture. I stand by the fact that feedback on this site has reduced. That was the point of my post - not to slag off any members nor to comment on ways to improve the site. I have always welcomed constructive feedback yet it seems quite a few people do not understand what constructive criticism is, or how to give it or just choose not to comment at all. It is everyone's perogative to comment or not but as the point of this site is to possibly learn and grow then I would have thought feedback was the key.19 August 2012
reality check........................most of the work posted here is below par......and yet most of the posters including some that should know better have embraced the concept that less is more..I dont need to produce a good image,The fact that i pushed a button entitles me to glory.19 August 2012
Reality check...................one grows from crits.....hOW?wHAT?
SIMPLE...MBlum is the role model. In spite of the negativity directed at her she continues to plod away at what she does.Taking pictures,,,and they are getting better. In spite of this community.
girlmick.......beware of what you wish for.You were the initiator of this discussion................19 August 2012
I'm pretty sure that I've just posted my last picture on here. I joined this site to learn and hopefully better my photography. With the number of people who do not post here anymore and with the definate lack of feedback (not just on mine but everyone else's pictures - I do read the feedback on other pictures in the hope it helps me too) I've just simply lost interest in this site. Laters everybody.19 August 2012
@sepiashutters Thanks for your message, I really appreciate it.23 July 2012
@frank I understand the problem you are describing. But Focussion is an open community. The only thing I can really do is improving the features which are helping to improve your feedback. I'm not a dictator or jury. Focussion is not like 1x.com.
@fredclarkphotography I know and I like this idea. You should post these things in the description, but maybe there should be some simple suggestions.
And I can't act real quick, because I'm doing this besides my day-job. I'm reading everything that's been said, but please be patient. I really want it to work very well. But as you might know, giving feedback can be really hard for us humans. :-)
I just wrote a very lengthy comment here . . . huge. Then I appearently wasn't logged in.23 July 2012
The basics are
@GlennN @mblum4 is a person who encourages people. You need to be encouraged to further your photography, to try new thing in it. She can be hard to understand, but this whole community is small and uninterested, so whatever your willing to give is more then enough. This topic has ranged from the end of April, and it only has 81 posts- this certainly proves my point about low numbers.
Next up, when someone crits you, see if it goes with what you were shooting- if someone tells you to put smiley-faces in a dark morbid fantasy shot, obviously that advice is not for you, but rather for the person who likes your work but thinks it can be improved.
Next: @Aljan is not responsible for gearing up beginner photographers to critique. It isn't his job. He can source material if he's generous, but he has other programming problems or advancements to take his time- and with beginner photographers, they're just learning. That's why they're called beginners. They are just learning about ISO, Depth of Field, Foreground, White-Balence, Exposure, Flash, Appeture, Shutter Speeds, Grain/Noise. Abbreviations such as VR, DX, AF-C or AF-S, HDR- they don't know, because they're still learning. You can't expect someone who's learning to give grade A advice. I also would like to say that means you shouldn't discredit their advice- do as I said before, see if what they're saying matches with what you were doing. Just because they may not know the specifics, they still know the simple stuff- if somethings off with what they see, you should definitly take a look and figure out what you need to change.
Next: You guys were talking earlier (it was probably June) about how even though a person is a most helpful member doesn't mean they give advice. It just means they give a lot of feedback- they don't deserve to be regognized- for all you know, they're jabbering on about Bigfoot and they're getting the spotlight. Well to that I have this to say; I haven't been on this site for a week. Not one. And I've been a 'helpful member' for two or three days. I did not make a huge effort, I just saw a photo that I saw could use some changes, or that Iiked and wanted to tell the photographer they had done a good job (encouragement). I don't even need the points- a current tally would give me 10 photos to post, more then enough for this site. But the fact that makes myself and the other members 'helpful' is that we actually talked, and gave advice. This is an inactive and discouraged community- some smaller photogs think they're advice is unwanted beccause of how much of a newbie they are to photography. Others just want to get advice from what they have on the site.
I've uploaded four photos. None of which are my best work. To say that they were would be a lie, as well as sad- some are nice, but as one or two people point out in the comments, there is something missing. And yet I will keep those photos up, in hope that people will come along and tell me why the exposure doesn't work, or that my ISO level produced too much noise- something that will still keep the community going. Something that will keep everyone going to help eachother.
... I've said a lot. Less then what I originally wrote, but that doesn't matter. Anyone with questions or comments, hit me up here or by a message via my profile.

As i am out of here you might want to ask Dennis how clubs deal with new photographers. As the past vice president of the Pretoria Photographic Society i can only say this.WE NEVER treated new comers to this art of all arts in the manner that some members have treated mblum.I am disgusted with the treatment meted out to her.She commented positively on the most inane of submissions and as she grew in confidence made a suggestion and all the while growing herself in her ability.Only to be reviled by photographers that have even less of a clue than her.Professional photographers would have thanked her for looking at there work taken her comments with a pinch of salt and continued to create great work.Yet here that is not the case.Shame on you Aljan for allowing that to happen22 July 2012
We need to be careful about being hurtfull, that is only wheels spining in mud, you get know where and serves no purpose. I still have a concern with point and shoot images that have increased in numbers, and would like to see some additional thought into some images posted, but realize this may never happen and has not driven me away, a person with little interest will simply drift away.20 July 2012
To bring up again what I said way back in this thread, its a ton easier to help those begining photogs out with comments/reviews if you are aware of what they tried to achieve with there photo they posted. If you cant say what your vision was when you took the image, then its snap and pray photography and maybe a site based on photo review is not where they belong. Its basic, to post a photo you need to explain what you tried to achieve, and what you want feedback based on, what you need help with etc. this will weed out the spray and pray photos as its too much work.
I have been so busy I have not posted much and find it hard with so many posts occuring the past few months, also some I just cant review as I dont know what to say, so I say nothing.
Some images are so well done, all I can say is "great work", its enough, the photographer is aware its great and is looking to share with others and get some pats on the back for there hard work.
Lets stop pointing fingers, being mean and give the founders the chance to obsorb our comments and figure out whats going to work here. The more advanced photogs keep posting to inspire there talent in others.
Begining photogs dont be shy to ask, "how was that done" when they see a image they like, most are more than happy to share there knowledge.
I've only recently joined the site, but I'm trying to comment when I can. If anyone wants to partner up and review photos together, feel free to leave a comment. By this I would been that I would check out your photos, and you would check mine- potentially we could even get a group going.20 July 2012
I might also like to add that most of the work presented by the most vocal moaners is not of that high a standard.19 July 2012
As for me I have deleted my work, will not be posting my all too inferior attempts at photography and leave this site to the wolves that will turn on each other.Shame on you all!
It is said that a society,a nation ,a people can be measured by the manner in which they treat the least within them.19 July 2012
The conduct of some members here with regard to there treatment of some less talented club members here is a disgrace.
The venom evident in much of the comment made in this feedback section is even more of a disgrace.
In advertising this site the goal was stated that amateur photographers would have a home in which to post there work,to learn from constructive comment and to grow as photographers. The club and many of its most vocal moaners have failed dismally in this regard

@Aljan, @ViewsOfParadise - Much to my dissapointment I too stopped using this site a few months ago. I love photography and and love improving my skills through having my shots critiqued, but I just felt that the quality of the comments was getting worse and worse. To be honest, it was the habitual commenting by the much discussed mblum4 that really drove me away. I struggle to understand her critique and when I do it's bordering on nonsense!19 July 2012
@luc, @barrington - Thankyou for having the *** to bring this out in the open and say what I guess a lot of people are thinking. This is a quality taht you should be commended for....this is a critiqe website after all:).
Every few weeks I come back on to Focussion in the hope that the @mblum comments have stopped, but unfortunatly I'm always dissapointed.
It's a big pity Aljan. You have a great site here and I really love how you engage the users to accomodate what they think is the best path forward for Focussion. I really want to become an active member again (even though I was only briefly around before leaving). This is a really tough problem that you need to address, I don't envy your position, however a tough decision might be required to resolve this issue once and for all.
Good luck Aljan..........

blessings for you too ,-i will try to do each day better ilove you to you all -here and i know a change is nessesary to get great site ,here where the people feel in thsi world of making good images, its all right
@aljan .... One suggestion I would have, which I had previously suggested in an email to you, would be to decrease the quantity of photos which non-members can upload (I would suggest cutting it from 100 to 50 or 25) and then require them to buy a membership once they reach the max number (50 or 25). I personally believe this will accomplish multiple goals:17 July 2012
1. Reduces the number of low quality photos being uploaded.
2. Forces those that are serious to pay for a membership which will also result in more constructive feedback.
3. Pays you for your time in moderating this website, which I believe you are entitled to receive some revenue for do so.
I believe this would be a better website with fewer members who are genuinely interested in improving their photography skills. Right now this website appears to be a free place for people to upload their vacation photos, which I don't believe is your goal / objective of creating this website.
I don't remember how much a membership costs, but if someone in this hobby can't afford $50.00 (USD)(or more) for a membership, then they really need to find a less expensive hobby because good equipment ain't cheap. Good advise ain't cheap either!!
Mr Aldjan ,,i was going to write here but i just made the mistake here when writing ,please try to delete here these sentences ,but i will send an email -i hope all of these work better here ,and i think a change is necessary to get better site ,,i love this site as much you love this art of many years in my life ,I agree with all of you here ,but i have been inother sites as photozine ,pixoto,i have the experience for r many years in this area of the photography ,as an art -i beleive not every people here are professionals ,we should be an example for others ,and try to get constructive comemnts that help them ,i think the good attitud will do of this site well known.,people like also a good leit -motiv too,,without this ,an agressive conduct will not generate any good positive in those who really want to put an image ,i am realistic ,to go for the next level you have to pass and to exptriment the bad too ,,you are welcome ,sorry if you dont like my images here ,but i love the nature better than anything -I show what I am into my personality-i hope and i wilsh the best in this way of learning and I am gratefull have been here for this long time ,as i really love this art from my heart and for many years i just got some rewards that show me i beloing to this art as ever ,,-be blessed ,Maria Blumberg16 July 2012
Mr Aldjan I come humbly here ,to tell, that,i beleive allof meembers here are not professionals ,16 July 2012
Motivating people is important as constructive criticism as. That's why I couldn't understand why "nothing to improve" comments taken as non-helpful. This kind of comments may make some body feel better and try to make his/her best.16 July 2012
Also, the criticisized people can flag "helpful" freely. Don't know the formula applied to detect "helpful", but hope by a slight change on formula may resolve the problem.
