Watermarks
Hey,
I'm considering adding a small, subtle watermark to my pictures - or is it unimportant and does it ruin a good picture?

No offense, watermarked image should be considering a finish product that survive at its own in personal portfolio. Not to post it at public forum asking for feedback and what to improve. And I'll try to avoid comment on it.

I always watermark images I post online.. but I don't watermark photos I submit to clients. I am a strong advocate of watermarking because it's not fair to see your own work being exploited without your knowledge. I always export the image with metadata embedded and this shows when where and who took the photo.

Keep it simple and small and have a link to direct people to the rest of your work. -

If you have the raw image you always have proof that its your photo, NEVER GIVE OUT THE RAW IMAGE.

agree with the comments here, have toyed with a few watermarks, but feel they detract from the image,i know when i look at an image with one on my eyes are always drawn to it,its quite easy to remove by anyone with the know how,

I do have another view than most people I think, I have used watermarks before on my images, but later decided against it, only because to my opinion it sometimes detracts from the image, and to have a subtle enough watermark is almost as if not to have one at all, because like @maspick said, a determined enough person can and will be able to crop/remove it if they want to.

And also credit and name recognition as @kanonkop said, in my opinion is best on a "word of mouth" basis, so I prefer people talking about my images and thus recommending me than they must look at my watermark to know who took it.
I hope one day to have my own "style" in my images that when someone sees them they know it was taken by me.
so to make this (not so) long story short I am personally against watermarking. -

yeah, like the others have said, make it discrete, put it in a corner that doesn't really attract the viewer (i.e. not over subjects, beginning or end of leading lines, etc).

As @maspick says, its easy enough to crop or remove the watermark if someone wants to. I'm not a commercial photographer, so i use it only on my best photos, and use it so that when friends and friends of friends see the pictures, they know its mine. so its just to claim the credit and build my rep.. -

@fredclarkphotography Yes, I've just started using Lightroom and it's a really great tool to add the watermark. :)

@maspick That was my worry, so I've just begun adding watermarks. I quite like your watermark - very creative and simple. -

Watermarking is all about establishing an image as your property and discouraging others from using it for their own purposes without permission. The point is to mark the image without marring it. Understand that someone really determined can usually do away with one, so it's no guarantee.

I use lightroom to add the watermark, I keep it pretty faded, if you look at some images you can barely see it

mblum4i also would like to put watermarcks ,but i dont because I participated in international contests whenever I can ,specially in contest they dont like watermarcks or framed ,its considered a failure ,-specially when its distracting-but many of my mentors have watermarck s in their photos ,its something you can doi in a corner and make it easy to watch the photo ,-mblum4
